SPAULDING REHAB'S RACE FOR REHAB TEAM MCMANUS
On April 20, 2009, as the starting gun is fired to signal the start of the 113th Boston Marathon, Team McManus will be running with more than their legs. They are a team filled with love, courage and inspiration who are running as part of the Race for Rehab to benefit Boston's Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.www.spauldingrehab.org In December, 2006, Mary McManus was diagnosed with post polio syndrome at Spaulding Rehab's International Rehab Center for Polio. Her family was preparing to adapt their Cape home to accomodate what everyone thought would be a progressive, neurological disease process. Mary defied the diagnosis and began a healing journey which will bring Team McManus (Mary, her husband Tom and her daughter Ruth Anne) to the starting line at Hopkinton next April.
Without the caring team at the Spaulding Rehab International Rehab Center for Polio, Mary would not be where she is today. She has regained her independence and has a quality of life she never imagined possible as a polio survivor. The team at Spaulding also provided her family with emotional support and education; they discovered that health is not something to be taken for granted and discovered their own road to health and fitness. They are only one of innumerable families touched by the incredible care provided at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.
With intensive physical therapy from Spaulding Rehab Hospital and making lifestyle changes, Mary's healing journey had begun. She subsequently enlisted the help of Janine Hightower, owner and fitness supervisor for Boston Homebodies (www.bostonhomebodies.com).
Team McManus has already completed the Corrib Pub 5K, the Marathon Sports Five Miler and Mary and her daughter Ruth Anne ran the Tufts 10K. They are up to 13 miles on their long distance training runs!
